Lighting up the night
But covering this event since that first time, I am still impressed by the output, the tremendous work, the cooperation of her merchants, businesses, and the library to make it such a success. A success in bringing into focus, what the village has to offer, not only in merchandise, but in showing the public a small town's charm and friendliness. It's also a great night to buy a unique Christmas gift at very reasonable prices. As he did for over 10 years, the town crier called out his welcome and with mayor Brian Jackson lighting up the Christmas tree, Cookstown's Christmas season was officially opened. Also taking part in the ceremony were councillor Lynn Dollin, and Barb Baguley from the Cookstown and District Chamber of Commerce. And as I did over those many years, I once again walked the streets and took my pictures while indulging in a sampling of all the goodies offered.
new kid on the block. Debbie's The Sweet Stop on Queen Street is a paradise for chocolate lovers, for people to taste, to find out what is a truly good chocolate and the many ways one can indulge in that Sweet of the Gods. Not only is there chocolate to eat, but also for your body and home. It was, however, a bittersweet night for others. After 11 years, 'Tis the Season, a Christmas-themed specialty shop, will be closing at the end of the year. "Business just isn't what it used to be," she said. "But after 11 great years, it's time to move on." However, she still enjoyed the evening, receiving visits from old friends and earning business from several of the thousands of people in attendance. The carollers put Christmas into the right perspective, singing at the Christmas tree and way up north on County Road 27, The Lutheran Church held its own carolling and bake sale. Just a little bit further up, Unique Arts and Gifts intrduced two new artists to the public, Tim Coulter and Rose Schenk. Coulter draws pencil sketches and portraits, while Schenk paints landscapes in acrylic.
It must also be noted, Friday evening Cookstown United church held her annual Ham Supper, and it was great to have such a feast before going out into the wet night. With files from Chris Simon |
