Trio playing Alliston Saturday

The Amity Trio plays "approachable music," says Michael Adamson and he vows even people who don't normally approach classical music with enthusiasm will be humming their way out of the theatre following the trio's performance in Alliston on Nov. 24.

Adamson is violinist for the trio, which is quickly building a reputation for classic as well as classical performances in venues from Toronto to Orillia.

"We're doing three pieces - from Beethoven, Shostakovich and Dvorak - at the Gibson Centre and some of the work, particularly Dvorak's, is based in the folk idiom," he said. "They're very catchy tunes, they'll stick in your mind."

For Adamson, an Alliston resident, it's a homecoming concert, while pianist Sandra Ruttan lives in Barrie and cellist Alyssa Wright hails from Orillia.

"We're very much a local trio in the sense we're all from Simcoe County, but I hope no one thinks that because we're local, we're not every bit as good as musicians from Toronto," said Adamson. "We're all professionals with a great deal of experience and we've developed a very good mix of music to appeal to a wide audience."

Adamson studied violin and chamber music at the Royal Academy in London, while Alyssa Wright is a versatile musician and vocalist who has toured widely. Sandra Ruttan is a music teacher and composer who performs as both pianist and vocalist. The performance will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20. To order tickets, or for more information, call The Gibson Centre at 435-2828.
