Four year warden's term considered
By Richard Blanchard

Simcoe county warden's position may become a multiple year position if some Simcoe county councillors have their wish.

Bradford West Gwillimbury mayor Doug White said at last week's council meeting that he felt that the county's role was being hurt by "its silly election cycle", which sees a new warden elected each year.

White made the comments after receiving a report on the progress of the county's governance committee.

He noted that York Region had success with electing a chair whose term was four years in length.

"Our neighbours have done well with a different governance structure. Bill Fisch is probably one of the most powerful and effective politicians in the province," he said.

"We're a $400 million dollar corporation and I think that its time that we get with it," said the Bradford West Gwillimbury mayor.

White said that the move to a four year municipal term had allowed municipal politicians to better fulfill their mandate.

The governance committee will be looking at the size of county council and the election of county councillors during their deliberations next year.
