Tammy Houle watched her kids spread holiday cheer at one of their favourite places Saturday.
Along with several other families, Houle and her two children attended the Innisfil Public Library's Lakeshore branch, for holiday celebrations Saturday. The children listened to Christmas-themed stories, received a visit from Santa Claus, decorated a tree and ate snacks during the festivities.
Houle says the event gave the kids a fun and inexpensive place to celebrate the holiday season.
"This is about family time; it's really important for me," she said, sitting on her knees as her son, five-yearold Ryne Beemer, approached holding a shiny golden ornament. "It's a happy season, a happy time."
Houle brings her children to the library frequently, and has enrolled them in several programs.
The library offers social activities in a fun and interactive environment, she said.
"We just signed up for library programs this year. The programs they run here are excellent," she said. "It's a community place for them. They look forward to reading and that's been a bonus. Their programs keep the kids involved."
Librarian Marilyn Pillar says the celebration helps promote the library by getting kids involved.
"We're selling some things for the Friends of the Library to raise money for some of the things they do," she said.
"It's important they come to the storytimes, because literacy starts with the spoken word. To do the Christmas one, where the stories are so exciting for them all, it makes it really fun and brings back some of the stories we grew up with. The tradition of Christmas is exciting."
The library's branches have several programs scheduled over the next few weeks.
Ornament decorating workshops and family holiday storytimes will take place this week. During the Christmas break, the libraries will also screen several movies.
