Santa tour and turkey shoot news The Volunteer Firemen's Santa Tour is on Saturday December 15 starting at about 10:30 a.m. Listen for the sirens coming down a street near you. Non-perishable food donations will be collected for the food bank by our volunteer firefighters as they escort Santa around our village. The Thornton Lions are busy selling Christmas trees at their lot located on Barrie Street north of Robert Street. They always have great trees and the proceeds go to support the good work that the Lions do. The recent Community Turkey Shoot held on Dec. 1 was another great success. Ninety rounds were fired with the high shot of the day going to Dale Weaver of Kirkfield. The winners of the big ham and turkey were Russ Burbridge of Baxter winning the ham and Sam Bourne of Barrie winning the turkey. A big thank you goes out to everyone who supported the shoot and to those who sold cards. The shoot wouldn't be possible without Steve and Marg McCabe, who allow the shoot to take place on their farm. Their generosity is greatly appreciated. Another shout out goes to five local Grade 9 students who stepped in and helped when the usual group that helps with the targets wasn't available. I'm told that Joelle Dewsberry, Elsa Johnston, Jessie Cunningham, Jordan Merkley and Ryan Crackle all did one heck of a job. The proceeds will be donated to the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre. The Thornton Skating Club will be holding registration this Friday December 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Thornton Arena for power skating and adult later skate. Both programs will run once a week for 10 weeks, with power skating beginning Friday January 4 and later skate begins Wednesday January 9. Adult later skate is for the over 18 crowd who'd like to learn to skate or improve their skating skills. For more information, call Charlene at 739-9226. Christmas is fast approaching and there is no better time than now to make time for Christ, the real meaning of Christmas. There are many Christmas activities going on at Ivy Presbyterian Church and they invite you to join them in celebrating Christ's birth. This evening, starting at 6:30 p.m., the senior youth group invites you to join them for caroling around the village of Ivy. Then on Sunday December 16 at 7:30 p.m., join them for Songs of Christmas. Drop in, relax, let go of some of that holiday stress, add your voice to the songs of Christmas and take the time to wish friends, neighbours and family a merry Christmas. Ivy Presbyterian Church will be holding a special Christmas Sunday service on Dec. 23 at 10 a.m. and their Christmas Eve service starts at 7:30 p.m. For information about any events or groups at the church, call 424-4675. At Trinity United Church, a special Christmas Sunday service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 23, and will feature seasonal songs and a bell choir. Their Christmas Eve service will be held at 8 p.m. It is always a beautiful service and a good way to start your Christmas celebrations. You still have time to drop a letter into Santa's Mailbox at the library. Children can pick up special lists at the library, fill them in and return them to Santa's Mailbox before Dec. 17 to receive a personal reply. Also, the Christmas Cheer Toy Drive will have a box at the library until Dec. 15. When out doing your own shopping remember the children who won't have a Christmas and pick up something a little extra for them and drop it off at the library. The Ontario Early Years next story and craft session will be on Dec. 11 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the library. There is no cost for this fun filled morning. Call the library at 458-2549 to register, or for more information. If you have any news, announcements, or coming events, you can e-mail me at thorntonnews@rogers.com, call 458-0869 or drop it off at 25 Robert Street. Bye for now. |
