Essa settles on library site
By Richard Blanchard

Essa council has remained committed to building its new library building at the township arena .

The decision was made despite mayor Dave Guergis' argument that the library would be better situated on Mill Street, on a property across from Triangle Park.

Guergis argued that the 50 acre property, which the township is currently negotiating with Simcoe County to take over, would give the library more prominence in the community.

"There are so many people who use Highway 90 and would drive by the library.

"It would also form part of an integrated approach to the property which see it used for trails and improvements in the river front park," he said.

There have been suggestions that a new township administration building and/or a public works building might also be located on the property.

But the rest of the council argued that the township should stay with the original location, beside the township arena in the southern part of Angus, at the intersection of Country Road 10 and Mill.

"The board thinks that is where the library would be best location. They seem to think that it works," said deputy mayor Terry Dowdall.

Councillor Rick Newlove agreed with Dowdall.

"I'd leave it up to the board," he said. "They know where they get the most business.''

Essa Township librarian Janine Harris-Wheatley said that the arena location would be more accessible to those residents outside of Angus who wanted to use the library.

Council eventually agreed to use the site at the library.
