Police setting up in local mall and libraries
      As part of Police Week celebrations, the South Simcoe Police Service wants to get to know its constituents a little better. The service will set-up displays at three locations throughout its jurisdiction on Friday.

      The 2008 Hike for Hospice, which took place on Sunday May 4 along the shores of Kempenfelt Bay, was a beehive of activity as organizers saw the number of participants dramatically increase from around 50 in 2007 to over 250 at this year's event.

Museum becomes barrier-free
      A barrier-free museum is Margaretta Papp-Belayneh's dream come true. For years, the chair of Innisfil's Accessibility Advisory Committee has been working tirelessly to address accessibility problems at businesses and buildings throughout the town and Simcoe County. Last Wednesday, her goal of creating a barrier-free society throughout the area came a bit closer to reality.

Kuzmich tournament raises $12,000
      The Kuzmich Memorial Hockey Tournament had another successful year, raising thousands of dollars for two separate charities. The South Simcoe Police Service's annual tournament was held at the Lefroy Arena in March. It raised $6,000 for upgrades to Innisfil Beach Park and $6,000 for the Canadian Crime Victim Foundation, said Sgt. Bob Eeles.

Break ground with Cookstown library staff
      The community is invited to the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Cookstown branch of the Innisfil Public Library and Community Centre. Representatives of the town and library board will host this event on Saturday May 24 at 11 a.m. The event will be held at 20 Church Street, the site of the old Cookstown Fairgrounds.

Essa opening Whiteside bridge
      Essa council has agreed on a date in mid-June to officially open its new E. Ross Whiteside bridge near Nicolston on the 5th Concession. Township CAO/road superintendent Greg Murphy told council Wednesday night that extreme high water levels in the Nottawasaga River during the the spring melt of snow had delayed work on the bridge by about two weeks.

      Prepare for the unknown. It's the message Innisfil's community emergency management coordinator and deputy fire chief Jim Ferry has begun stressing to constituents. Last week, Ferry manned a display of emergency preparedness pamphlets and information at the New Town Hall.

Float on a boat for the MS Society
      Hop on the Miss Midland for the Simcoe County MS Society's annual boat cruise. The cruise will take place on June 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. Boarding will begin at 6:30 p.m. from the Midland town dock. During the cruise guests will enjoy door prizes, finger food and a cash bar. Tickets cost $25 and can be obtained by calling the Simcoe County MS Society at 705-733-0488.

Angus library may be built near school
      A new township library in Angus could be built in conjunction with the new high school planned for the community, says Essa mayor Dave Guergis. Guergis told council last week that he had preliminary discussions with the local public school trustee Robert North to see if the library might be adjacent to the new school.

I was a member of the Innisfil Accessibility Advisory Committee when it was first formed and have been followed the progress of this group with great interest.

      Victoria Day is celebrated on the first Monday preceding May 25th. It is a statutory holiday throughout all of Canada, except the Atlantic provinces. Victoria Day falls on the second to last Monday in May, which is usually the third weekend, but can be the fourth in years like 1999, where the 31st fell on a Monday.

      Drumhead service and parade: This will be held at the Lefroy branch June 12th, with the parade starting at 1 p.m., running from Arnold Street along Ewart to the legion parking lot.       Canada celebrates speech and hearing month in May, but did you know deaf kids can talk? Babies are being screened at birth for hearing loss in most (not all) provinces of Canada today. When identified early and given access to hearing technology and auditoryverbal therapy, the majority of children born with hearing loss today will learn to talk.

      Euchre players should be aware of the games held the first Friday of the months of February to June. The cost is $3 per person which includes lunch. They take place at the Women's Institute Hall in Newton Robinson and start at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome.
