      Litterbugs beware, Innisfil council could be setting new fines for illegal dumping. Council has asked town staff to review current littering and garbage disposal policies, with the intention of setting minimum fines and placing warning signs throughout the municipality.

      Immunizations are the best way to protect yourself from preventable diseases such as measles, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit provides regular immunization clinics at all office locations for infants through to seniors.

Residents spot 'cougar' near Mapleview
      Several Innisfil residents say they have spotted a cougar in their backyards, on farmland and even lounging on a picnic table since last year. But while the Ministry of Natural Resources has received several reports of cougar sightings, the large cat has so far evaded officials.

West Nile programs being supported
      A number of municipalities within Simcoe County have written to voice their support of a resolution by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit calling for continued provincial support for West Nile virus programs. The resolution called on the province to commit itself to funds for control and surveillance of the mosquito-borne disease.

Whiteside Bridge dedication Saturday
      Essa Township will be holding a ceremony this Saturday morning, to open the newly constructed E. Ross Whiteside Bridge near Nicolston. The bridge, on the township's 5th Concession, between Highway 89 and the 5th Sideroad, will honour Whiteside, who was township reeve from 1982 to 1985, and served as Simcoe county warden in 1984.

      The Innisfil Public Library is pleased to present journalist Margaret Webb, author of Apples to Oysters: A Food Lover's Tour of Canadian Farms. She will be reading from her book and hosting a question and answer session.Webb, originally from Simcoe County, travelled from the Yukon to Newfoundland and Labrador seeking out local farmers and small-scale producers.

      A volunteer property standards committee, composed of Essa Township volunteers, might improve compliance to the municipal bylaws, according to the township's mayor. Mayor Dave Guergis suggested the formation of a new council committee to deal with untidy lots as a better first step in ensuring that residents keep tidier properties.

Water pipeline could feed into irrigation system
      Surplus water from the New Tecumseth pipeline could be used for farm irrigation as a means of restoring water levels to the Mad, Pine and Boyne rivers in South Simcoe, according to Essa's mayor Dave Guergis.

      Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there. Tomorrow, Thursday June 12 is the last Barrie Thornton Old Time Fiddlers Night until the fall. It will be held at the Lions Hall and the admission price is $3 per adult and children are free. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. sharp.
