Council puts a hault to possible engine brake bylaw
      Large vehicles will not be required to silence their engine brakes in Innisfil. A town committee had asked staff to investigate the feasibility of posting signs asking truck drivers to restrict the use of engine or 'jake' brakes on their large vehicles within urban and village areas in the municipality, during a recent meeting.

Bridges and culverts could cost town $5.5 million
      Over the next 10 years, Innisfil's bridges and road culverts could need over $5.5 million in repairs, according to a report released through the town. However, staff say all 13 bridges and 14 culverts within the town's jurisdiction are currently deemed safe. In fact, only Everton Bridge in Gilford is in need of immediate repairs, which are already underway.

Boards near provincial average
      Most high schools in South Simcoe continue to trail the provincial average in the Grade 10 literacy test written in March. The provincial success rate for students taking the test for the first time is 84 per cent.

Geranium files for $3.6 million in reimbursements
      The Geranium Corporation/Kimvar Enterprises will officially seek $3.6 million in legal fees for the defence of Big Bay Point Resort. The company filed a Notice of Motion with the Ontario Municipal Board last week, asking for reimbursement from several organizations opposed to the 235-hectare waterfront resort.

Election signs may alter
      Election signs need guidelines within the town of Innisfil, according to municipal staff. After complaints from local residents following the last municipal election, Innisfil staff have developed a draft bylaw which places restrictions on all federal, provincial, regional and town candidate signs.

      Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD Canada) wants Canadians to know that we can all make a difference in keeping our roads safe and in reducing impaired driving crashes. The organization is asking everyone to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.

Trash dates stand firm
      A suggestion by New Tecumseth mayor Mike McEachern to have special pick-ups of garage when inclement winter weather causes cancellation of regular collection would have substantial costs. McEachern was responding to a recommendation from a Simcoe County sub-committee that deals with waste management.

      The weekend announcement that Ontario New Democratic Leader Howard Hampton will be stepping down next year, prompted some gracious comments from York-Simcoe MPP Julia Munro. Hampton announced Saturday there will be a leadership convention in March, and that he will not be a candidate.

A warm donation from the legion
     Submitted photo The Royal Canadian Legion's branch 547 donated Poppy Fund money to the Innisfil Fire and Rescue Service recently. Innisfil fire chief Scott Griffith, middle, was given the cheque by legion representatives Bill Hubbard, left and Ed Collins. The money will be used to purchase two resuscitators.

      It's just two days until the strawberry supper at Trinity United Church. The supper will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. on June 20th. A meal of ham, salads and of course, strawberries can be enjoyed for just $13 for adults and $4 for children six to 12, while preschoolers are free. MacLaren fundraising campaign aims for $135,000
      The MacLaren Art Centre launched its annual campaign on April 17, with a goal of raising $135,000 by July 1. The money is used to support its 2008 programs. This year's campaign is led by volunteer chair Jason O'Neill, a recent resident of Barrie and owner of several McDonald's restaurants.
