Cooking up a country-wide storm
      Margaret Webb replanted her roots in Simcoe County, if only for a brief time. The county-born author and journalist spoke to a group of local residents at the Innisfil Public Library's Stroud branch last week, promoting her book Apples to Oysters: A Food Lover's Tour of Canadian Farms.

Order of the Eastern Star draw raises money for benevolent work
      Each year, the Order of the Eastern Star in Stroud hosts a draw to raise money for benevolent work. This year's draw was held June 14, with proceeds benefitting the Canadian Diabetes Association. Seven prizes were given away, including a flat screen television, quilt, cordless drill, golf balls and an electric tie rack.

West Nile virus programs supported
      A number of municipalities within Simcoe County have written to voice their support of a resolution by the board of health calling for continued provincial support for West Nile virus programs. The resolution called on the province to commit itself to funds for control and surveillance of the mosquito-borne disease.

Library staff given Dorothy Duncan Award
      The Innisfil Public Library was presented with the 2007 Dorothy Duncan Award by the Ontario Historical Society on Saturday June 14th at the University of Guelph. The award is presented annually to a non-profit organization for outstanding service to its region.

      The health unit will be borrowing from a business management model to measure its own performance. Dr. Kathleen Dooling, medical resident at the health unit, told the board of health there had been a commitment made to measure progress related to the outcomes identified in the strategic plan.

Coupon books being sold by Crime Stoppers
      Crime Stoppers of Simcoe-Dufferin-Muskoka is currently selling coupon booklets that contain restaurant and local establishment discounts. Each book is being sold for $10. Crime Stoppers was established as a non-profit charitable organization in February 1987. It is not funded by the provincial or federal government, or by any police agency.
