The team hoped to raise several hundred dollars through the fundraiser. They were soaking cars and cooking hot dogs for Royal Victoria Hospital.

Members of the Innisfil Stampeders 1994 girls soccer team hosted a car wash and barbecue at the Sobeys in Alcona during the weekend, as part of ongoing efforts to raise money for RVH.

The girls scrubbed and rinsed vehicles, and sold food and refreshments for several hours over the two days, said coach Kraig Schwartz.

"We're raising money for the RVH (Simcoe Muskoka Regional) Cancer Centre," he said.

"Fifty per cent of what we raise goes there. The other part of the money helps the girls go to tournaments, different team building events and specialized training."

This season, the team has hosted several charity barbecues, and has also organized their second annual golf tournament, which will take place at Innisbrook Golf Club.

Over the past two years, the team has raised over $5,000 for RVH, the MS Society and Christmas Cheer. The fundraisers have helped instill a sense of civic responsibility among the girls, said Schwartz.

"We find doing this helps the community and teaches the girls that it is not all about them, and that there are others that are less fortunate," he said. "It's about the community, helping, giving back and supporting. We're trying to make a presence."

The team is still recruiting golf tournament sponsors and prize donors. They're also expecting about 80 golfers to play. The $125 entrance fee includes lunch, 18 holes of golf, a cart and buffet dinner, said Schwartz.

"We do our barbecues throughout the summer," he said.

"We also do the golf tournament. A portion of the registration goes to RVH. There are also other events within the tournament, like putting contests, and all that money goes to RVH as well. We're looking for golfers, people to donate prizes and local companies to sponsor."

The team will host another barbecue at Sobeys Aug. 16 and 17.
