Young lady of the dance
      She's not Irish, but Kendra Stewart has a fancy for that country's celebrated dance style. At the age of nine, the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Elementary School student and Irish dancer recently placed fifth at the Eastern Canadian Championships. With the placing, she has qualified for the National Championships, which take place in Nashville, Tennessee in July.

      Some tiny dancers will be roaming nearby neighbourhoods this weekend. On Dec. 6, about 15 students from Miss Jennie's Performing Arts Studio will be carolling throughout the Alcona area, along the 13th Line, Kimberly, Linda and Taylor streets, and the Maplegrove section of town.

RVH earns cancer care award
      Royal Victoria Hospital was honoured at the Cancer Care Ontario Quality and Innovation Awards recently, for establishing Canada's first portable radiation treatment facility at the hospital. The radiation treatment clinic, which opened in April, has treated more than 200 patients from across Simcoe Muskoka.

Bradford resident wins over $306,000 at slots
      What started out as a regular evening of some entertaining slot play paid off for 44-year-old Bradford resident Hillary Landsdown. Landsdown hit the jackpot last week, winning over $306,000. "I grabbed a stranger and now new friend, and asked "what did I win?"" said Landsdown excitedly "I was shaking and realized that now I can buy my dream Mini Cooper!

Historical society members discuss stained glass
      The Essa Historical Society held its October meeting at the Thornton Library recently. The meeting was opened with the Lord's Prayer. Our guest speaker was Lee Redmayne from Red- Dale Glass Works, who discussed stained glass.

SANTA: Event grows again this year, says organizer
      Sometimes its easier to become a present than to receive one. At least that's how member of the 2nd Alcona Guides felt Sunday afternoon. Walking strongly as a group, the girls donned a combination of boxes, and brightly coloured packaging and ribbon, as part of their participation in the annual Innisfil Santa Claus Parade.
