Employee was just following policy After reading the original letter to the editor from Helen Leaver (December 5, 2007) and the subsequent comments in The Scope, the one thing that comes to mind is, did anyone ever ask the attendant what they are told to do in a circumstances such as this, or did anyone bother to ask the gas station owners what company policy is? Usually, when someone is working for a company, the company makes the policies and decisions. The employee follows the company's instructions. What exactly are these employees told to do in cases such as the one regarding Leaver. I understand that Leaver was allowed to stay inside until the gas station got busy and the space would be needed for paying customers. For anyone who does not know the physical layout of the kiosk, the square footage is very, very limited. There have been times that I have had to wait outside for other customers to finish their business in order for me to pay my bill. I have been a resident of Innisfil for over 60 years, born and raised here. I don't think my age or years of residency give me the right to expect preferential treatment. It is not up to any private business to keep me warm while waiting for a ride. If Leaver is friends with the owner, why would she not go straight to them instead of putting their business in such poor light? All this unsavory controversy would have been avoided. The comment by Chris Simon (December 12, 2007) certainly put some of our youth in a positive light and for that, our society will benefit. But, did he go to the attendant to hear that person's side of this story? Did he do any investigation into this at all, as a good journalist should do? It all seems pretty one sided to me. I always thought that there are two sides to each story. Where is the side of the story from the attendant or for that matter, from the proprietor?
I am all for putting the blame where blame belongs, but lets first find out for sure where it does belong, shall we? |
