New Year's baby a Thornton resident

Welcome to the area's first baby of the year, who also happens to be a Thornton resident. Little Grace Lacasse arrived at 1:26 a.m. January 1. Congratulations to proud parents Jody and David.

Tomorrow, Thursday January 10 is the next Barrie Thornton Old Time Fiddlers Night. It will be held at the Lions Hall and the admission price is $3 per adult and children are free. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. sharp. All fiddlers, singers, callers, dancers and listeners are welcome. Call Cec Denney for more information at 458-9996.

The Thornton Area Action Committee's annual Valentine's Dance will be held on Saturday February 9 starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 per person and include a lunch served at 11 p.m. DJ Keep Them Dancing will provide the music for the evening. The Irish Club is holding a funding raiser to support the Dialysis Clinic at RVH. The event will be held on Sunday January 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Army, Navy, Air Force Club on George Street in Barrie. The cost is $15 per person and children are just $2. There will be a variety of non-stop entertainment sure to please everyone.

Cyberbullying is becoming a major concern for parents and caregivers everywhere. A special presentation on Internet Safety will be presented by OPP Sgt. Robyn MacEachern on Thursday January 31 starting at 7 p.m. at the Angus Recreation Centre Gymnasium. Everyone is welcome to come and learn how to keep your children safe while on the internet.

Happy New Year from everyone at the Ivy Presbyterian Church. They would like to invite youth in grades 4 to 8 to The Fighting Temptations youth group to be held on Thursday January 17 from 6:45 to 8 p.m. at the home of Greg and Darlene Applegate. The children join together for sports, games, devotionals and snacks. The program is held bi-weekly on Thursday evenings. For more information or directions call 424-2987.

You are also invited to join the congregation for their regular Sunday services at 10 a.m. which includes Sunday school and nursery services.

The next Essa Historical Society meeting will be held on Saturday January 28 starting at 1:30 p.m. at the community room in the Thornton library. The agenda has changed for the meeting and the annual reports will be presented along with show and tell for roll call.

Christmas tree pick-up will be held next week starting Jan. 14. All trees must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on Jan. 14.

They will not take trees that are bagged or have tinsel or decorations on them.

If your tree is buried in snow or frozen into the bank, they won't take it either. For more information, check the waste management calendar that recently arrived in the mail.
