Innisfil Winterhawks Peewee A/E Tri-R Construction took the road to Ottawa on Dec. 27 for the worlds largest hockey tournament, the Bell Capital Cup.
This was an A tournament, which hosted teams from eight countries. There were over 480 teams who took the ice in 35 arenas throughout our nation's capital.
The first game was against a team from New York, the Mamaroneck Tigers. The boys played well, Brad Purcell did a stellar job in net throughout the whole game and some key saves during a 6 on 3 in the last two minutes of the game to keep the lead. Hawks won 4-3.
The team then faced the winners of the tournament, the Ottawa Valley Silver 7 Black, losing 5-0. It was a hard fought game, with great goaltending by Bryan Meirdel.
The boys then played their last game at Scotia Bank Place against the Quebec Voyageurs de Gatineau, defeating them 3- 1.
The boys came up short, each team had to win all three games to advance to the quarterfinals, but they had a wonderful experience and played really well.
The final was a skills competition which each team member had to participate in. Alex Ayres, Nick Papapetrou and Travis Gray won the skills competition for the agility relay.
Both goalies participated also. In the 3 on 1 Purcell let one goal in, while Meirdel also let one in during a shoot out.
We are very proud of our boys and their continual achievements. Congratulations to all the boys and thank you to all our parents for their ongoing support. This is an experience that the boys will have forever.
