Snowmobiler goes through ice

South Simcoe Police were called to the 30th Sideroad and Tijou Woods area near Big Bay Point Thursday at about 12:30 p.m., after a man broke through thin ice while operating his snowmobile.

The snowmobile sunk in Lake Simcoe in about 20- feet of water, about 100 metres from shore.

The 40-year-old Sharon man driving the snowmobile was able to swim to firmer ice, pull himself out of the water and roll to safety. He then walked to a nearby cottage for assistance.

He was wet and cold when police arrived, but did not require medical attention. Police are issuing warning to all persons including ice fishermen, to stay off the ice on the lake. It is still unsafe.
