Public symposium raising awareness of long-term county waste problems "Right now, Simcoe County is deciding how our waste will be managed for decades to come. And there is no plan - there is no public debate," says Ray Millar. Waste management is a major factor in our quality of life. If we get it wrong, we will live with the consequences for generations to come. Simcoe County has been managing our waste for years. To date much of that effort has been about landfill. Now, new environmental awareness and technologies point to a need for change. And to make that change safely, the people of Simcoe County need to know what their waste management options are and how they can get involved. The Simcoe Waste Coalition, oru a private citizens group, is holding two information nights. These meetings will give residents and municipal councillors a balanced view of what is happening with our waste and what the future may hold. Featured speakers will include Guy Crittendon, editor of Solid Waste & Recycling Magazine, who will focus on trends related to the waste management hierarchy. Andy Campbell, director, Solid Waste Management for York Region, will tell us what is happening in his jurisdiction, including their collaboration with Durham Region. He will also outline the issues that need to be assessed in any forwardlooking Waste Management Plan. The evening will include a panel discussion, where audience members will have a chance to talk to the experts. The two events will take place on Thursday Feb. 21 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30), Brian Orser Arena - Upstairs Lounge, 61 Maria St., Penetanguishene and Tuesday Feb. 26 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30), St. Patricks Church Hall, 215 Pine St., Stayner. All are welcome. There is no charge. Donations to offset costs will be gratefully accepted. |
