Bringing back some classic games
By Chris Simon

Curtis Fortin, 7, makes his chess move Monday.
Curtis Fortin was looking for any excuse to beat his mom at chess.

On Monday, the sevenyear old got his opportunity, playing several rounds of the classic game at the Knock School heritage site. Curtis and his mother Lori were among several people who attended the Innisfil Historical Society's heritage game day at Knock.

The free family-oriented event gave kids and adults the chance to play several old heritage games, including Snakes and Ladders, Gravitation, Chinese Checkers and Dominoes.

"It makes me smarter and I really like it," he said, after making a move with one of his white chess pieces.

Lori says the event was a great way to spend time indoors during the first provincially-mandated Family Day holiday.

"Instead of staying at home, it takes you outside of the house and play a game without distractions," she said.

In addition to the games, visitors were also treated to cookies and hot chocolate and were invited to view pictures preserved by the historical society. Society president Margaret Baker says the event provided an inexpensive and fun atmosphere for families to bond.

"It's quite successful," she said. "This was our first attempt, so we didn't know what to expect. People want to see the redecorated school."

Lori and Curtis decided to attend the free game day once poor weather hit the area over the weekend.

"We were going to go tobogganing, but it was too wet to go," she said. "We thought this sounded like fun."
