Historical society program changes made There's been a change to the program at this Saturday's Essa Historical Society Meeting. The subject has changed to police memorabilia with speaker Wayne Cole. The meeting still takes place at the Thornton library starting at 1:30 p.m. and the roll call is pioneer post offices. All are welcome to attend. Please call Olive at 458- 9971 for more information. The Thornton Women's Institute meets tonight, Wednesday February 20 in the community room at the library starting at 7:30 p.m. Roll call is to read short news clipping about agriculture and the guest speaker will be Sam Squires from Alliston speaking about potatoes. All are welcome to attend. Recently, the Thornton Women's Institute presented a cheque for $500 to the Regional Cancer Centre at Royal Victoria Hospital. The donation was made in honour of Nonie Finkbeiner who was the top fundraiser on the institute's team that participated in the CIBC Run for the Cure for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation last fall. Finkbeiner raised approximately $2,000 for the run and participated the day after her 80th birthday! Well done, you are an inspiration to us all. This past week at Ivy Presbyterian Church, they celebrated Valentine's Day. The Women of the church met on Tuesday February 12. As the theme was Valentine's Day, everyone was asked to bring or wear a heart. Wendy Zimmerman led the meeting, opening with a devotion titled A Recipe for Friendship. The meeting continued with a discussion of pews news, event planning and lots of fellowship and laughter. The Fighting Temptation junior youth group met on Feb. 13 at the home of Darlene and Greg Applegate. Their meeting also followed the Valentine's Day theme and the children enjoyed floor hockey, devotions and Valentine snacks. If you have a child who would be interested in joining this fantastic group they meet biweekly on Thursday evenings. The next meeting will be at the home of Pastor Steve and Wendy Zimmerman. Call Darlene at 424-2987 for more information. You are invited to join the congregation at Ivy Presbyterian Church Sunday February 24 at 10 a.m. The Sunday worship service will be followed by a delicious pancake breakfast. They hope to see you there. The next preschooler's storytime begins next week at the library. Stop in and register your three to fiveyear olds for fun, stories, crafts and more for just $2 per child for the four week session. Did you know that this coming week is Freedom to Read Week? Every year this week is held to remind us why our freedoms need protecting and this year marks the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The library will have a special display during the week to celebrate Freedom to Read Week. For more information, call the library at 458-2459.
