Correction

An article that appeared in the Feb. 20 edition of The Scope contained incorrect information. A paraphrase attributed to Environment Minister John Baird indicated that rotting algae creates strong amounts of oxygen, which is harming fish stocks in Lake Simcoe.

Rotting algae uses oxygen. Thus, algae lowers oxygen levels in the lake, causing small fish to move closer to the surface of the water to breath. Those smaller fish are easily found and eaten by larger predators in the warmer water, causing stocks to drop.

The Scope regrets the error.
