Snowmobile driver injured on lake Shortly after 3:20 p.m. Monday, South Simcoe Police and Innisfil Fire and Rescue attend the scene of a snowmobile collision on Lake Simcoe. This occurred south of the 6th Line, about 150 metres from shore. A 34-year-old Innisfil woman was snowmobiling with her family, but was riding on her snowmobile alone, travelling southbound at an estimated speed of 50 to 60 kilometres per hour. She struck a pressure crack that was about two to three feet high, which caused her to lose control of the machine. It rolled over, causing the woman to sustain serious but non life threatening injuries. Simcoe County paramedics attended the scene as well and treated the patient with the assistance of police and fire. She was then transported in a rescue toboggan back to shore and taken to hospital by ambulance. The Innisfil Fire and Rescue ice boat and an air ambulance also attended the scene and stood by but were not required. Police are warning all snowmobilers to be cautious while operating their snowmobiles on the lake, as pressure cracks are prevelant. This particular pressure crack runs east from the Innisfil shoreline then south on Cooks Bay for a about two kilometres. It is one to two metres in height and is difficult to distinguish due to drifting snow. Police will be conducting snowmobile patrols on the lake and trails during March Break and on the weekend to ensure safe operation by all drivers. An investigation into the collision is ongoing. |
