Lakers' first season continues It has been a long season for the Innisfil Lakers this year with all they have went through to get to where they are now. To start the season, the club had only five weeks to prepare a team for the 2007- 2008 season, after being granted a franchise in August. The team started their inaugural season off with a loss to the last place Douro Dukes 2-0, and would quickly fall to a 3-4 record. The Lakers would be forced to play their first 15 games on the road, with no steady rink to call home for the boys, because of many delays with the brand new Innisfil Rec Centre. Since the new rink has opened, the Lakers have only lost one game in regulation, and that was last round to the Richmond Hill Rams. For a first year team, the Lakers have eight players that have been talked to by NCAA colleges both Division 1 and 3. Despite the rough start, the Lakers managed to finish in third place in the regular season standings with a 29- 10-3 record. The biggest accomplishment for the lakers this season has been when they beat the first place Bradford Rattlers 10-7 back in February. In fact, the Lakers' past three games against the Rattles have all been close with a 10-7 victory for the Lakers, a 4-3 loss in Bradford and an overtime loss 2-1 in Innisfil. The Lakers will be playing Temiscaming Royals this Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. start at the Innisfil Rec Centre. Temiscaming leads the series right now one game to nothing after a 4-1 victory Sunday afternoon in Temiscaming. All minor hockey players are reminded to wear their jersey or jackets to the Lakers game and get in for free. For more information, including upcoming games, visit www.innisfillakers.com. |
