Even the BBC like to play April Fool's jokes The origin of April Fool's Day is difficult to pinpoint but over many centuries, people have been pulling jokes on unsuspecting friends and family. It may be that we are just gullible or maybe we're just willing to believe what our friends seem sincere in telling us is true. I searched for such a joke to share and found that this has been going on for some time, as far back as the 1700s. I found one a little closer in time than that. In 1957, the respected BBC news show, Panorama, announced that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in. Many called the BBC wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. To this the BBC diplomatically replied that they should "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best." Library news: Churchill branch manager, Debra Mann. There will be something for everyone, so join in the excitement and take home a great deal Smile: A duck walked into a bakery one day and asked for a pork chop. The baker said, "We aren't a butcher shop. We don't sell meat here." So the duck left. The following day the duck went back and asked again. This time the baker said, "No, and if you come here again I will nail your feet to the floor." The following day the duck returned and asked, "Have you any nails?" The baker replied, "No". So the duck said, "Well, I'll have two pork chops then." If you have any news or items for this column, please contact me at lagerow@rogers.com or call 436-9769. |
