Flooding expected in several areas across town Warm temperatures and rainfall over the last few days are expected to cause flooding and ice break-up throughout the Lake Simcoe watershed. The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood advisory through the rest of today. Watercourses will be flowing higher than normal, making area streams and rivers dangerous, especially near bridges and culverts, says Stephen Troan, a duty officer with the LSRCA. "There is a potential for ice break-up to occur in our rivers and streams, due to the warm temperatures we are expected to experience," he said. "The possibility of flooding exists, should ice jams occur. Over the last few days, between seven and 14 millimetres of rain fell in the region, increasing the amount of snowmelt and runoff, said Troan. Innisfil mayor Brian Jackson says residents need to take precautions near waterways, and expect flooding over the next few weeks. "Our staff has been very cognizant in meeting on a regular basis (about this)," he said. "We're making people fully aware of the issues concerning flooding in lowland areas. It's not a panic situation, just one of those things where we're trying to be adequately prepared as we go through this time of snowmelt." Water levels are expected to be higher than normal. And while conservation authorities generally notify residents, flash flooding can occur without warning, said Jackson. During a flood advisory, residents should move furniture and valuables to higher floors in their homes, and fill vehicle gas tanks, in case an evacuation order is issued, he said. Residents should also listen to local radio stations once flood warnings are issued, to gather information and advice. Children should also be reminded to stay away from watercourses in the area, said Jackson.
In case of an emergency, residents are advised to prepare a 72-hour survival kit. Here are some of the items to include: |
