Volunteers are welcome at any library branch

Susan Baues Branch Manager, Innisfil

Public Library

Canadians have a rich history of volunteering and community involvement. Volunteers are essential contributors to many organizations including the Innisfil Public Library. National Volunteer Week (April 27 to May 3) pays tribute to the millions of Canadians who donate their time and energy and provides an opportunity for all of us who benefit from their selfless work to reflect and give thanks. The Friends of the Library are an important support group for the Innisfil Public Library and its customers.

Not only does a well equipped library benefit all of us now, but it will be of value to our children and grandchildren. The Friends' efforts demonstrate what citizen participation can do for a community and for those who get involved. An active Friends group will ensure a strong library for future generations.

The Friends promote the library by raising awareness in the community, as well as fundraising for a variety of projects.

Some projects made possible through the Friends' efforts include Writer in Residence (2004), murals, a bursary for local high school students and the purchase of equipment. In addition, the Friends sponsor special events and assist in community events such as Pitch-in-Day. One of the most successful Friends projects is the library's Books for Babies program. This program gives a book to new Innisfil babies and provides parents with resources to guide them in supporting their child's literacy development. The Friends' next major project will raise funds to assist with the building of the new Cookstown facility and support a Canada Council grant application for the 2009 Writers In Residence program.
