You can help change this statistic by joining the Canadian Cancer Society as a volunteer canvasser for our annual door to door campaign. Volunteers are needed in Alcona, Big Bay Point and Lefroy. The Canadian Mental Health Association of Barrie-Simcoe supports the development and continuance of self-help groups as a viable community resource for individuals experiencing difficulties. Self-Help groups can provide; support and understanding through difficult times; an opportunity to meet with others who have experienced similar difficulties; information and education; a safe and comfortable environment; suggestions regarding coping strategies that help to get through difficult times. The Beta Classes will be held at the Innisfil Community Church starting January 9th at 1pm. Beta is a life changing program and the twelve week course will enable you to live free from fear, stress aniexty and the pain of past hurts and traumas. The Grange Hall in Lefroy hosts euchre beginning at 12 p.m. Every third Tuesday includes a pot luck lunch. The cost is $2, and there is a 50/50 draw as well. Both regular and bid euchre are played. THURSDAY APRIL 24 The Simcoe County Quilters' Guild will meet at 1 p.m. at the ANAF Hall on George Street in Barrie. Susan Steele will have a trunk show for the guild. Steele was introduced to quilting in 1982 and was instantly hooked. Afounding member of the Northern Lights Quilters' Guild, as well as the North Bay Appliqué Society, Steele has a passion for appliqué and handwork, is a 12 year alumnus of the Elly Sienkiewicz Appliqué Academy, and has already developed and marketed several quilting patterns. FRIDAY APRIL 25 Dream Auction at Trinity United Church on Robert Street in Thornton. The viewing starts at 6:30 p.m. and auction begins at 7 p.m. Barbs Richards from a Touch of Class will be the auctioneer. For more information or to donate an item, call Pat at 424-9433. SATURDAY APRIL 26 The Innisfil Community Events Corporation, Area Productions and Rock 95 will present musician David Wilcox, as part of ongoing efforts to raise funds for the new Innisfil Recreation Complex. The Essa Historical Society meets at the Thornton library starting at 1:30 p.m. The topic is antique appraising with guest Henry Jones of Roadshow Antiques at the 400 Market. THURSDAY MAY 1 Am Shalom Synagogue will be hosting their annual Holocaust Remembrance Day program. Judy Cohen, a holocaust survivor, will be speaking. SUNDAY MAY 4 The George R. Richardson Park in Newmarket will host a Sunoco Earth Day 2008 tree planting, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, hosted by the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and the Town of Newmarket, includes information displays, draw prizes, entertainment and a fundraising barbecue. The Friends of the Innisfil Public Library, Lakeshore branch, are holding a fashion show and tea at 2 p.m. The event will be held at the library on Innisfil Beach Road. Plenty of prizes will be available. WEDNESDAY MAY 7 A roast beef supper will be held at Gilford United Church. Homemade pies will be available. Two sittings will be held, at 5 and 6:30 p.m. Admission is $13 for adults and $5 for children under 12. For tickets, call 456-2006. FRIDAY MAY 9 The fourth annual South East Simcoe Good for Life Committee's Mayor's Walk for Health will take place at 12:15 p.m. The walk will start at the Sobeys in Alcona, and run for two kilometres, rain or shine. SATURDAY MAY 17 The Thornton Lions Club will be holding a giant garage sale at the Lions Hall in Thornton. The hall is located in County Road 27. Anyone wishing to rent a table to display merchandise can call Bob at 424-3105. Table rental is $10. Vendors are wanted for the Gilford and District Horticultural Society's South Innisfil Arboretum Plant and Vendor Sale. Their annual giant sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will have lots of flowers for sale, nearly-new tables, bake tables, raffle, crafts, a barbecue and much more.
