Get out and walk your block this April. Two out of five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. You can help change this statistic by joining the Canadian Cancer Society as a volunteer canvasser for our annual door to door campaign. Volunteers are needed in Alcona, Big Bay Point and Lefroy. The Canadian Mental Health Association of Barrie-Simcoe supports the development and continuance of self-help groups as a viable community resource for individuals experiencing difficulties. Self-Help groups can provide; support and understanding through difficult times; an opportunity to meet with others who have experienced similar difficulties; information and education; a safe and comfortable environment; suggestions regarding coping strategies that help to get through difficult times. MONDAYS

Friends of the Innisfil Library, Stroud Branch, meetings are held the third Monday of every month at 7 p.m. Gilford and District Horticultural Society meets second Monday of the month from March to November at Churchill Community Centre at 7:30pm. New members are always welcome. Job Search Assistance, help with job search, resumes, interview tips, job bank internet assistance at the Thornton Library 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. and the Alcona Library from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Services provided at no charge by The Employment Outreach Team call Marilee or Kathy at (705) 728-0897 for more information. Cookstown Computer Club drop-in program for elementary students, 4 to 5 p.m. at the library.

St. Paul's Anglican Church at Yonge Street and Mapleview Drive East hosts a playgroup for parents/grandparents and children from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Stringing Pearls from 1 to 3 p.m. contemporary Bible study, Aprons and Briefcases, an opportunity for women juggling many tasks to nurture their spirit on the first and fourth Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. For more information call 722-7755.

The Beta Classes will be held at the Innisfil Community Church starting January 9th at 1pm. Beta is a life changing program and the twelve week course will enable you to live free from fear, stress aniexty and the pain of past hurts and traumas. The Grange Hall in Lefroy hosts euchre beginning at 12 p.m. Every third Tuesday includes a pot luck lunch. The cost is $2, and there is a 50/50 draw as well. Both regular and bid euchre are played. WEDNESDAYS

Friends of the Innisfil Library, Lakeshore Branch, meet the third Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. New members are most welcome.

Euchre, bid euchre, Scrabble and cribbage is played at Alcona Seniors club every Wednesday at 11:30 to 3 p.m. at the ABC Hall on the 25th Sideroad below Innisfil Beach Rd. Refreshments and fun days. Bring a bag lunch.

Euchre every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7:30, Newton Robinson United Church in aid of Gwen Taylor Library. Refreshments.

Weight Loss Group. The Alcona Chapter of TOPS meets at 7:15 at Goodfellow Public School. Call Joan Davies at 436- 3197 after 6 and on weekends.

The Cookstown Co-Operative Playgroup is at St. John's Anglican Church in Cookstown located on Hwy 89, east of Hwy 27. All pre-school children and their care-givers are welcome, as well as new members. The hours will be 9:30 to 12:00 every Wednesday & Thursday. St Paul's Anglican Church, located on the corner of Mapleview and Yonge Street, has two new youth and young adult programs. From 6:30 - 8:00 pm we are beginning a study comparing the gospels and learning how and why they developed. For more information, call (705) 722-7755. The Painswick Horticultural Society meets on the third Thursday of each month from March to November. Meetings take place at the St. Paul's Anglican Church hall.

THURSDAY MAY 1

Am Shalom Synagogue will be hosting their annual Holocaust Remembrance Day program. Judy Cohen, a holocaust survivor, will be speaking. SATURDAY MAY 3

The Innisfil Community Events Corporation will host a garden show at the Stroud Arena from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Over 15 local exhibitors and guest speakers will showcase outdoor and garden products. A live auction will also be held during the evening. Admission is $10.

Aflower arranging seminar for home and competition will be held at St James United Church in Stroud from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Painswick Horticultural Society. Jean Warrington, accomplished floral designer, will be the workshop leader. Admission is $10 for the public, but members are free. Call John at 436-5292 to register.

The Simcoe County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society is meeting at 2 p.m. at the LDS Church, at 79 Ferris Lane in Barrie. The guest speaker is Lady Mary Teviot from England, who will speak about parish registers. The book table opens at 1:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. SUNDAY MAY 4

The George R. Richardson Park in Newmarket will host a Sunoco Earth Day 2008 tree planting, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, hosted by the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and the Town of Newmarket, includes information displays, draw prizes, entertainment and a fundraising barbecue. The park is located at Bayview Parkway and Leslie Valley Drive. For more information, call 905-895-1281. The Friends of the Innisfil Public Library, Lakeshore branch, are holding a fashion show and tea at 2 p.m. The event will be held at the library on Innisfil Beach Road. Plenty of prizes will be available.

WEDNESDAY MAY 7

A roast beef supper will be held at Gilford United Church. Homemade pies will be available. Two sittings will be held, at 5 and 6:30 p.m. Admission is $13 for adults and $5 for children under 12. For tickets, call 456-2006.

FRIDAY MAY 9

The fourth annual South East Simcoe Good for Life Committee's Mayor's Walk for Health will take place at 12:15 p.m. The walk will start at the Sobeys in Alcona, and run for two kilometres, rain or shine. There will be prizes and refreshments following the walk. FOr more information, call Innisfil Parks and Recreation at 436- 3740 ext. 4310.

SATURDAY MAY 17

The Thornton Lions Club will be holding a giant garage sale at the Lions Hall in Thornton. The hall is located in County Road 27. Anyone wishing to rent a table to display merchandise can call Bob at 424-3105. Table rental is $10.

Vendors are wanted for the Gilford and District Horticultural Society's South Innisfil Arboretum Plant and Vendor Sale. Their annual giant sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will have lots of flowers for sale, nearly new tables, bake tables, raffle, crafts, a barbecue and much more. Vendors can join for a cost of $15 per space, plus $5 for a table. For more information, please call Evie Teras at 436-4776 to reserve your space. Spaces are limited. The event will take place at 1474 Shore Acres Drive in Gilford.

MONDAY JUNE 18

The Children's Treatment Network will host a symposium entitled Working Together for Kids and Teens with Disabilities. This is a free conference for parents of kids with disabilities and children's services providers. Child care costs will be paid by the network.
