County council visits Newmarket

Recently, members of Simcoe County Council toured Southlake, which serves a significant proportion of South Simcoe citizens.

The council had the opportunity to learn more about this unique hospital, the advanced care that county residents receive at Southlake, and how south Simcoe communities will benefit from the newest developments.

Council members learned that 22 per cent of Southlake's inpatient and 17 per cent of its outpatient caseload are county residents who have the benefit of a level of care normally provided in teaching centres.

For example, Southlake's Regional Cardiac Program is the fourth busiest cardiac centre in Ontario ahead of Sunnybrook, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Michaels, and behind only the UHN, Ontario Heart Institute and Hamilton Health Sciences Centre. It has earned an international reputation for leading edge care including a world-first cardiac catheterization procedure performed in March 2007.
