Dance team wins several medals in Orillia
by Cathie Miller

The Positive Step Dance Academy's competitive dance team attended their first dance competition of 2008, at the Historic Orillia Opera House this weekend.

The dancers were thrilled to perform on a stage that has been stood upon by many great performers such as Gordon Lightfoot, Rita MacNeil, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra to name a few. The event was held over four days, starting at 8 a.m. and continuing until after 10 p.m. each day, with a full schedule of performances which included more than 1,000 dancers from 18 dance studios performing over 700 routines.

The Positive Steps dancers did very well, earning many silver and gold medals, and several overall awards for earning the highest mark in their dance categories. Congratulations to Miss Kim and the dancers on their successes at the Orillia Dance Festival.

Thursday May 8 is the next Barrie Thornton Old Time Fiddlers Night. It will be held at the Lions Hall and the admission price is $3 per adult, while children are free.

The doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. sharp.

All fiddlers, singers, callers, dancers and listeners are welcome. Call Cec Denney for more information at 458-9996.

You are invited to join Wit and Wisdom for Seniors (younger folk are welcome too) on the first Thursday of every month at the Living Faith Community Presbyterian Church in Baxter. The next one will be held on May 1 starting at 10:30 a.m., with guest Anne Brolley of Hummingbird Enterprises. She will be discussing gardening for seniors and will be bringing items of interest to make gardening easier for seniors. All are welcome to attend.

The Thornton Area Action Committee will be holding a garage sale on May 16 and 17. Donated items are needed to make this sale a success. Call Willy at 458-9290 to donate. Proceeds from the garage sale will benefit the Thornton library and other community projects.

The next Ontario Early Years' Make 'n Take will be held at the library on May 6 and 13. It's a fun session of stories, crafts, songs and more for three to five-yearolds. For more information, call the library at 458-2549.
