THURSDAY MAY 8 The life of the late Sir James Gowan, judge and senator, and his extended Gowan- Ardagh-Strathy family, will be the topic of guest speaker Mark Fisher, at the Barrie Historical Association's meeting. FRIDAY MAY 9 The fourth annual South East Simcoe Good for Life Committee's Mayor's Walk for Health will take place at 12:15 p.m. The walk will start at the Sobeys in Alcona, and run for two kilometres, rain or shine. SATURDAY MAY 10 The Friends of the Library's Cookstown branch will host their annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be a children's table to purchase plants for Mother's Day, as well as perennials, herbs, tomatoes, and vegetables. SUNDAY MAY 11 Stroud Presbyterian Church is planning a special Mother's Day celebration at 10:30 a.m. All those attending their morning service will be treated to a special performance by six-year-old violinist Colin Barkley, along with solos from Margaret McPherson (soprano), Lloyd Preston (old time fiddler), Paul Crocker (trumpet), Ken Cheney (grand piano) and John Hart (organ). THURSDAY MAY 15 The Alzheimer Society of Greater Simcoe County will host a monthly caregiver support group meeting at The Spoke in Sandy Cove Acres North, from 1 to 3 p.m. Caregivers will get the chance to discuss issues and successes in a confidential and supportive environment. Call John at 436-5292 for further information. SATURDAY MAY 17 The Thornton Lions Club will be holding a giant garage sale at the Lions Hall in Thornton. The hall is located in County Road 27. Anyone wishing to rent a table to display merchandise can call Bob at 424-3105. Table rental is $10. Vendors are wanted for the Gilford and District Horticultural Society's South Innisfil Arboretum Plant and Vendor Sale. Their annual giant sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will have lots of flowers for sale, nearlynew tables, bake tables, raffle, crafts, a barbecue and much more. Vendors can join for a cost of $15 per space, plus $5 for a table. For more information, please call Evie Teras at 436-4776 to reserve your space. Spaces are limited. The event will take place at 1474 Shore Acres Drive in Gilford.
