Thinking of others throughout the year

It's easy to think of others at this time of the year.

As residents shop for the perfect gift at retailers throughout the region in December, charities like the Salvation Army and Barrie Food Bank seem to make donating an easy task. There are boxes left in foyers at schools, and the familiar sight of volunteers ringing bells outside of shops.

Residents simply have to reach into their pockets for change, or pick-up an extra few items at the grocery store for donation.

Hard working volunteers also donate their time to help support others in need. The Christmas for Kids program has grown to support about 45 families in the Innisfil area since it was founded about 20 years ago. The Simcoe County Paramedics and Christmas Cheer programs have each collected thousands of toys, food and toiletries for distribution during the holiday season.

Of course, the Innisfil Public Library and several local schools are also collecting a variety of items to support charitable organizations.

At a time of year like this, you can really see the consideration for others and the heightening of the human spirit. But the key is keeping up on that good will throughout the entire year.

As Canada enters what is being perceived as one of the worst economic crisis' in several decades, it will become even more important for fortunate residents to help those in need. Mortgage and banking issues in the United States, significant layoffs and cutbacks in the automotive industry and a plunge in the stock markets are already beginning to be felt in the local economy.

According to several local charities, demand is greater than ever. But that demand stays long after the holiday season, and demonstrates the importance of giving throughout the year.

Until our governments are capable or willing to fully aid those in need, the task partially falls to society's more fortunate citizens. That support helps others during their greatest time of need, with the hope that they can thrive if given an opportunity.

Giving throughout the year is simple, however it takes a little more effort. But in uncertain economic times, that effort can be a lifesaver. Buying and donating extra retail and grocery products helps support the local economy, provides jobs for residents and gives the needy a chance.

When we keep up the giving, friends, neighbours and society benefit.
