Healing with a big beat at Am Shalom
      Ringing in winter rarely sounds so good. And about 40 people agree. An evening of improvisational music and dancing was held at the Am Shalom Synagogue in Barrie's south end last week. The event, hosted by Big Beat North, aims to help local residents cope with the onset of the winter season.

Quilts and Christmas crafts on display at annual bazaar
      The Ladies of Lefroy United Church held an annual Christmas bazaar at the site and adjacent Grange Hall last month. Hundreds of residents peered at craft and bake tables, ate lunch and participated in draws. Several colourful quilts and Afghans were also spread across pews in the church.

      In Ontario, 42 per cent of the population wears dentures. However in most cases, it is very difficult to tell who is in fact wearing dentures. This is largely due to the fact that most people are wearing properly fitted and recently replaced dentures. However, there are far too many who are still wearing old dentures with worn teeth and improper fit.

Beaver Trail land aquired by LSRCA
      The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority has received a gift on behalf of the residents of the lake's watershed — more land for the Beaver River Trail Conservation Area. In separate purchases, the LSRCA has acquired three new parcels of land from local landowners to enlarge the conservation area and protect the land for future generations.

Session showcasing treatments for Alzheimer's in Bradford today
      Alzheimer's disease doesn't just strike the elderly. A new study, Rising Tide: The Impact of Dementia on Canadian Society, reveals that 40 and 50-year-olds are also developing the disease. Within five years, an additional 250,000 Canadians could develop Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.

Furry Friends seeking volunteers and donations
      Furry Friends animal shelter in Barrie is looking for help from the public this winter. The organization is a nonprofit, no-kill shelter for lost, abandoned, abused or rescued cats in the Barrie area. Every year, volunteers struggle to make ends meet during the winter months, as it is the slowest time of year for adoptions, the chief source of revenue.

Nicotine replacement therapy available through health unit
      Free nicotine replacement therapy is still available for those people who missed out on the recent quit smoking workshops hosted by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. Eight workshops were held throughout Simcoe and Muskoka, providing about 240 people with the tips, tools, and nicotine patches or inhalers they need to quit smoking.
