Barclay House placed on heritage registry
      The Barclay House is receiving some protection from the Town of Innisfil. Council passed a resolution to place the stone house, which was built around 1870, on the provincial government's heritage registry, during a meeting last week.

Cancer society needs daffodil sellers
      The Canadian Cancer Society is seeking a volunteer for the position of daffodil pre-sales. Primary duties will include contacting local businesses for the sales of daffodil bunches, and delivery. This is a short-term position lasting only for the month of March.

Earth Hour encouraged
      Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax are the first Canadian cities to join Earth Hour in 2009. Already, hundreds of other cities in more than 70 countries have pledged their support, including Las Vegas, London, Sydney, Moscow, Hong Kong, Rome, Manila, Oslo, Cape Town, Warsaw, Lisbon, Mexico City, Dubai, and Copenhagen.

The designs for peace
      Tia Clemmensen wants peace. And that's why the Goodfellow Public School Grade 8 student entered the Lions Club's annual District Peace Poster contest. Along with about 25 other Goodfellow students, Clemmensen completed a poster, which displayed the importance of promoting peace throughout the world.

Cyber safety seminar planned Feb. 18
      Alliston Union Public School Council, in conjunction with the Ontario Provincial Police, is hosting an information evening about safe cyber use, risk and prevention on Feb. 18. The event will take place in the Alliston Union gymnasium, from 7 to 9 p.m.

      Ladies Night is returning to OLG SLots at Georgian Downs. On Thursday nights until Feb. 26, women are encouraged to swipe their Winner's Circle Rewards cards between 7 and 9 p.m., to receive their free Ladies Night package. Pitch-In Day may be ditched without increased support
      Pitch-In Day could be tossed from Innisfil's calendar, if a lack of support for the event persists, says mayor Brian Jackson. Last year, over 2,000 volunteers collected garbage from parks, ditches and roadsides from areas throughout the municipality. However, the number of volunteers was relatively low, when compared to previous years.

      Join pharmacist Carolyn Glover for a presentation entitled Safe Meds for Seniors, at the Innisfil Public Library. The Ontario Seniors' Secretariat, in partnership with the Ontario Pharmacists' Association, provides safe medication use seminars for seniors across Ontario.

Essa residents avoid tax increase
      Most Essa Township residents will not be seeing any increase in the municipality's portion of their tax bill. Essa council approved their 2009 budget last week and, despite an increase of 3.1 per cent in the township's overall levy to its residents, growth in assessment will mean no increase in the municipal portion of the budget.

Town receives $1.2 million in OLG Slots revenue
      Innisfil mayor Brian Jackson announced the Town of Innisfil has received nearly $1.2 million from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation for hosting OLG Slots at Georgian Downs. The payment represents the third-quarter share of slots revenue to the municipality in 2008.

Furry Friends needs assistance
      Furry Friends Animal Shelter is in need of mature, reliable volunteers for their adoption centre in Petsmart in Barrie. The store is located at 33 Mapleview Drive West. Staff are looking for help on weekend shifts, but are flexible on scheduling. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, and training will be provided.
