Get out and walk your block this April. Two out of five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. You can help change this statistic by joining the Canadian Cancer Society as a volunteer canvasser for our annual door to door campaign. Volunteers are needed in Alcona, Big Bay Point and Lefroy. The Canadian Mental Health Association of Barrie-Simcoe supports the development and continuance of self-help groups as a viable community resource for individuals experiencing difficulties. Self-Help groups can provide; support and understanding through difficult times; an opportunity to meet with others who have experienced similar difficulties; information and education; a safe and comfortable environment; suggestions regarding coping strategies that help to get through difficult times. Good Food Simcoe is a nonprofit organization bringing the Good Food Box to Innisfil. The box consists of an assortment of fruits and vegetables, much of which is grown locally. The cost is $10 for a small box and $15 for a large box. Orders must be pre-paid in cash and picked-up on the delivery day. They also need volunteers on packing day. HomeLife/Kempenfelt- Kelly Realty's Innisfil Beach Road office is collecting pennies for the Alzheimer Society program Penny for your Thoughts, along with grocery tapes from Sobeys, Zehrs and Foodland. Drop them off at the office any day of the week. Donations will be submitted to the organization each month for the remainder of the year. FRIDAY MAY 15 The Gilford and District Lions will host a Victoria Day Weekend fireworks sale at Trotter's Esso, located at the Highway 89 and 11 intersection. The sale will run until Monday May 18. There will be a selection of fireworks at competitive prices. It will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The Innisfil Lioness monthly progress euchre event will take place at the Lions Hall on Innisfil Beach Road. Admission is $10 per person. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the event begins at 7:30. The two day Thornton Area Action Committee's fundraising yard sale will kick-off at the vacant lot on the south side of Barrie Street. Proceeds will benefit the Thornton library and various community projects.

SATURDAY MAY 16 The Innisfil Historical Society invites residents to Knock School Heritage Site to enjoy local students' history displays and hear Ross Wallace and Bill Warnica speak on the history of Simcoe County. SATURDAY MAY 23 The Gilford and District Horticultural Society's annual plant and bake sale will feature vendors, a draw and barbeque from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year, it will be a trunk sale for vendors with spaces available for $15, and tables for $5. Purchase lunch with a dessert and picnic in the nineacre South Innisfil Arboretum. The arboretum is located at Shore Acres Drive and the 20th Sideroad in Gilford. Alcona's Largest Garage Sale will take place at the Crossroads Plaza, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is organized by the Alcona Business Association. Spot rental tables are available for $25. A plant and bake sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Looking for herbs, hostas, or ground cover? The Painswick Horticultural Society has the plants needed, grown by members for the community. The event will be held at the Foodland Plaza in Stroud. SUNDAY MAY 24 Stroud Presbyterian Church will hold its 100th anniversary service at 10:30 a.m. The guest speaker will be Reverend Cheol Soon Park, assembly moderator for the Presbytery of Canada. Special music will be provided by Margaret McPherson soprano, Lloyd Preston, violinist, and Colin Bailey, student violinist. SATURDAY MAY 30 The Essa Historical Society will celebrate their 30th anniversary at the Baxter Community Hall, starting at 1:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. SUNDAY MAY 31 A benefit concert will be held at Trinity United Church on Robert Street in Thornton, starting at 7 p.m. It will feature local talent, with the proceeds going towards the Walk to End Breast Cancer. SATURDAY JUNE 6 Cookstown is getting ready to celebrate on June 6 and 7, and this year the fun will be bigger than ever. It's the 26th year for Wing Ding and that means Cookstown streets will be bustling with hundreds of yard sales, an antique and craft sales area, music and a display at the Georgian Bay Steam Show grounds. There will be free parking and a shuttle bus at the Cookstown Outlet Mall and the steam show.
