Giving back, Mom-to-Mom
Mom-to-Mom Sale organizer Sheri Lind sorts through children's products at her home last week. The sale, which will feature a variety of kids toys, clothes, Photo by Chris Simon strollers and other merchandise, will take place at the Innisfil Community Church on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local mothers will be helping their peers and community May 30.
That's when the Mom-to- Mom Sale will return to the Innisfil Community Church, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Over 20 vendors and about 30 tables will be on hand, with a variety of gently used children's clothing, toys, books and strollers available for purchase.
While the event is intended to provide inexpensive purchasing options for local parents, organizers will also be collecting non-perishable items for a local food bank. Money raised from table rentals will also benefit La Tienda, a charitable organization that provides education and business skills to women living in the Dominican Republic.
"We're donating the money to La Tienda," said organizer Sheri Lind. "Haitian women (living in the Dominican) are refugees and they're not allowed to go to work or go to school. They make jewellery and purses and sell them. It helps them support their families. We're going to donate to that organization, because it's women helping women."
"They're giving people life skills and dignity. It's a fair trade art co-op," said Lind. "Some of the La Tienda items will be for sale too."
About 200 people are expected to attend the event, especially given the current economic climate, she said.
"My whole desire behind doing this is just to help people," said Lind. "People need a place to sell their stuff. With the money I make, I buy next year's clothes. We people losing their jobs and the economy the way it is, people can get good quality items at a bargain price."
The event is free, and strollers are allowed in the facility. However, parents are encouraged to bring their own shopping bags or baskets, and pay for items in cash.
Due to safety regulations, vendors are unable to sell cribs and car seats at the sale. But almost any other childrelated items should be available for purchase, said Lind.
"It's a place to sell, and a place for people to buy," she said. "It helps both people, and it's a targeted audience. It's a really popular thing; I find it's been very popular for us."
Tables for the event are sold out, but organizers are considering hosting another event in the fall. For more information, contact Lind at innisfilmom2mom@gmail.c om.
