ISSUES & INTERESTS SATURDAY JUNE 6 Cookstown is getting ready to celebrate on June 6 and 7, and this year the fun will be bigger than ever. It's the 26th year for Wing Ding and that means Cookstown streets will be bustling with hundreds of yard sales, an antique and craft sales area, music and a display at the Georgian Bay Steam Show grounds. D-Day took place on June 6th, 1944. Join members of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 547 on Saturday June 6th, at 2 p.m., for the 65th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Europe. Everyone is welcome. Members of the branch took part on that famous day in history. A memorial service will be held at the cenotaph.
The Simcoe County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society is meeting at 2 p.m. at the LDS Church, located at 79 Ferris Lane in Barrie. The guest speaker is Derek Boles from the Toronto Railway Historical Association. He will discuss railways that shaped Toronto. Everyone is welcome to attend. The sale takes place at 1984 Webster Boulevard, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Plenty of new items will be available for purchase each day. For more information, call 431-1113. MONDAY JUNE 8 The Gilford and District Horticultural Society will meet at the Churchill Community Centre, located at 6322 Yonge Street, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Master Gardener and a past president Judith Rogers will help choose appropriate plants for shaded gardens. THURSDAY JUNE 11 Barrie Thornton Old Time Fiddlers Night will take place at the Lions Hall on Barrie Street. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 7. The Essa Challenge golf tournament needs participants. The event will be held at Bear Creek Golf Club. All proceeds benefit the Royal Victoria Hospital's Regional Cancer Centre. There will be a special appearance by Major League Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Fergie Jenkins. For more information, call 424-9770. SATURDAY JUNE 13 St. Paul's Anglican Church, located at Yonge Street and Mapleview Drive East, will host an annual flea market and bake sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Games, books, household items, collectables, toys and trinkets will be available for purchase. The fifth annual Daisy Dejeuner will be held at Innisfil Community Church, beginning at 12 p.m. The event is organized by the church's Women's Connection group. The event will feature a luncheon and guest speaker Krissy Carroll. Tickets can be purchased for $15. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event. Reserve a seat by June 5. A Blue Jays baseball clinic will take place at the Ivy baseball diamond from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The clinic is open to all children ages seven and older. Admission is $35 and includes lunch. SUNDAY JUNE 14th The Sixth Line Cemetery will host an annual Memorial Day service at 2:30 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a lawn chair. THURSDAY JUNE 18 The Prostate Cancer Support Group's Barrie chapter of Man to Man will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Canadian Cancer Society Office, located at 64 Cedar Pointe Drive. SUNDAY JUNE 21 A Cemetery Day service will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Coulson's Hill, beginning at at 11 a.m. Refreshments and social hour will follow in the church hall. FRIDAY JUNE 26 A strawberry supper will be held at Trinity United Church on Robert Street in Thornton. Servings will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Adult admission is $15, children (six to 12 years old) eat for $5, and preschoolers are free. Takeout is available for adults for $13 and children for $5. For more information, call 458-9893. SATURDAY JUNE 27 Royal Canadian Legion branch 547 will host a Canada Day parad. Watch for posters, and plan to attend this annual get together celebrating the founding of the country. The parade will include a band, antique cars, decorated bicycles, and the Innisfil Fire and Rescue Service, and a police escort. There will be prizes for the best decorated children's bikes, plus hot dogs and drinks for all kids in the parade.
