Get out and walk your block this April. Two out of five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. You can help change this statistic by joining the Canadian Cancer Society as a volunteer canvasser for our annual door to door campaign. Volunteers are needed in Alcona, Big Bay Point and Lefroy. The Canadian Mental Health Association of Barrie-Simcoe supports the development and continuance of self-help groups as a viable community resource for individuals experiencing difficulties. Self-Help groups can provide; support and understanding through difficult times; an opportunity to meet with others who have experienced similar difficulties; information and education; a safe and comfortable environment; suggestions regarding coping strategies that help to get through difficult times. Good Food Simcoe is a nonprofit organization bringing the Good Food Box to Innisfil. The box consists of an assortment of fruits and vegetables, much of which is grown locally. The cost is $10 for a small box and $15 for a large box. Orders must be pre-paid in cash and picked-up on the delivery day. They also need volunteers on packing day. HomeLife/Kempenfelt- Kelly Realty's Innisfil Beach Road office is collecting pennies for the Alzheimer Society program Penny for your Thoughts, along with grocery tapes from Sobeys, Zehrs and Foodland. Drop them off at the office any day of the week. Donations will be submitted to the organization each month for the remainder of the year. MONDAYS Friends of the Innisfil Library, Stroud Branch, meetings are held the third Monday of every month at 7 p.m. The Stroke Recovery Association (Barrie and District) welcomes individuals with aphasia, as a result of a stroke or acquired brain injury, to attend a communication group. The group is led by a speech-language pathologist or communicative disorders assistant, at the office of The Stroke Recovery Association, which is located at 80 Bradford Street. All sessions are provided free of charge (with a small annual membership). Individuals will experience conversation in a supportive environment. Rotary meets Mondays at 7:30 a.m. in the child minding room of the YMCA at the Innisfil Recreation Complex. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to visit. TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meets every Tuesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Thornton Library, located at 34 Robert Street. Park at the back and come in the side door. The cost is $2, and there is a 50/50 draw as well. Both regular and bid euchre are played. A charge of 25 cents goes towards prizes. The event is open to everyone. WEDNESDAYS Friends of the Innisfil Library, Lakeshore Branch, meet the third Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. New members are most welcome. Euchre, bid euchre, Scrabble and cribbage is played at Alcona Seniors club every Wednesday at 11:30 to 3 p.m. at the ABC Hall on the 25th Sideroad below Innisfil Beach Rd. Refreshments and fun days. The Alcona Chapter of TOPS meets at 7:15 at Goodfellow Public School. Call Joan Davies at 436- 3197 after 6 and on weekends. The Cookstown Co-Operative Playgroup is at St. John's Anglican Church in Cookstown located on Hwy 89, east of Hwy 27. All pre-school children and their care-givers are welcome, as well as new members. The hours will be 9:30 to 12:00 every Wednesday & Thursday. Join us at St. Paul's Anglican Church at the Yonge Street and Mapleview Drive East intersection in Innisfil, between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. for the Pioneer Club. This is a fun life-skills activities program for children from kindergarten to pre-teens. Caring adult leaders assist with this biblebased, kid-focused and flexible children's program that transforms lives by helping boys and girls develop healthy relationships and positive self-image accomplished through teamwork and non-competitive awards program. Barrie Chapter of Schizophrenia Society of Ontario family support group meets the last Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Canadian Mental Health Association, Barrie-Simcoe Building, 39 High St., Barrie. WEDNESDAY JULY 1 Innisfil Lioness Canada Day celebrations will take place at the Lions Hall in Alcona, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be free games, prizes, hot dogs, cake, juice, water, face painting, balloon animals, coffee and tea. A flag raising will take place at 12 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. York-Simcoe MP Peter Van Loan will host a free pancake breakfast, in honour of Canada Day, at the Churchill Community Centre. The breakfast will run from 8:30 to 11 a.m. THURSDAY JULY 2 St. Peter's Anglican Church, located at 6254 Yonge Street in Churchill, is hosting its annual strawberry supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 each. TUESDAY JULY 7 The Barrie Ribbons of Hope dragon boat team will host their third annual golf tournament at Tangle Creek Golf Course. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. There will be dinner, lunch a silent auction and prizes. Admission is $150 per player, and includes a GPS golf cart. WEDNESDAY JULY 29 Thornton Fire Fighters Association's golf tournament will take place at Tangle Creek. Admission is $100 per golfer and includes 18 holes, a cart, and a steak dinner. SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 26 Sunnybrae Elementary School's reunion will take place from 10:30 to 4 p.m. Built and opened in 1959, Sunnybrae celebrates 50 years of educating Innisfil youth.
