Get out and walk your block this April. Two out of five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. You can help change this statistic by joining the Canadian Cancer Society as a volunteer canvasser for our annual door to door campaign. Volunteers are needed in Alcona, Big Bay Point and Lefroy. The Canadian Mental Health Association of Barrie-Simcoe supports the development and continuance of self-help groups as a viable community resource for individuals experiencing difficulties. Self-Help groups can provide; support and understanding through difficult times; an opportunity to meet with others who have experienced similar difficulties; information and education; a safe and comfortable environment; suggestions regarding coping strategies that help to get through difficult times. Good Food Simcoe is a non-profit organization bringing the Good Food Box to Innisfil. The box consists of an assortment of fruits and vegetables, much of which is grown locally. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Barrie and District is actively recruiting volunteers over 20 years old for an in-school mentoring program in Innisfil. Both men and women are needed. They will be required to volunteer one hour per week during the school day. Many kids will benefit from having fun and spending time with someone, by simply playing a game of checkers, tossing a football, or reading a book together. WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 18 Bid euchre will be held at the Gwen Taylor Community Library in the Newton Robinson United Church building, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $3 per person, and a lunch will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend. FRIDAY NOVEMBER 20 Talent Night will be held at the Thornton Lions Hall, located at 248 Barrie Street, starting at 7 p.m. The event is presented by the New Life Community Christian Church. For more information, call 434-4269 or visit www.newlifeontheweb.net. The Innisfil Lioness monthly progressive euchre and food drive event will take place at the Lions Hall on Innisfil Beach Road. Admission is $10 per person. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the event begins at 7:30. Cash prizes, draws, a light buffet, euchre pots and a bar will be available. SATURDAY NOVEMBER 21 Innisfil Eastern Star will host a roast beef dinner and bake sale at the Masonic Hall in Stroud, beginning at 6 p.m. For more information, call Hilda Neely at 722-6275. The South Simcoe Palette Club is having a 50th anniversary show and sale at the new Cookstown Library and Community Centre, from Nov. 18th to Dec. 2nd. Regular library hours apply. There will be a reception on Nov. 21st at 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. TUESDAY NOVEMBER 24 The Bond Head Olde Tyme Fiddle Dance will take place at 7 p.m. The event is held at the Bond Head Community Centre on County Road 27. THURSDAY NOVEMBER 26 The Simcoe County Quilters’ Guild will meet at the ANAF Hall, located at 7 George Street in Barrie, at 1 p.m. Orillia area resident Wanda Milankov will host a discussion entitled 'A Quilter Goes to School'. SATURDAY NOVEMBER 28 The Country Christmas Bazaar, Craft and Bake Sale will be held at Trinity United Church on Robert Street in Thornton. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a white elephant table, and guest vendors with knitting, decorative art, books, wreaths, gift baskets and candles. There will be a continental breakfast for $5, with proceeds benefitting a mission and outreach. WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 2 A roast beef supper will be served at Gilford United Church, with servings at 5 and 6:30 p.m. Homemade pies will be available. Adult admission is $13, and children under 12 years old eat for $5. For tickets, call 456- 2006. FRIDAY DECEMBER 4 St. Peter's Anglican Church, located at 6254 Yonge Street in Churchill, is hosting its third annual free turkey dinner, from 5 to 7 p.m. This dinner, with all the trimmings, is offered to everyone. SATURDAY DECEMBER 5 The Thornton Community Turkey Shoot takes place at 6831 County Road 27, beginning at 10 a.m. Only 12 gauge shotguns will be allowed, at a cost of $3.50 per shot. A food booth will be available. For more information, call Mike at 458-9279. Lefroy United Church will host its annual Christmas bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tables are available for $25 and $30. They will have a quilt show, raffles, lunch counter, and white elephant penny and bake tables available. For a table rental, call Marilyn Wade at 456-7508. SUNDAY DECEMBER 6 Christmas in the Village will take place along Robert Street in Thornton. The event starts at 6 p.m., with a visit from Santa planned for 6:15. Count down to the lighting of the trees, music and caroling, with hot chocolate and treats supplied for everyone. Everyone is welcome to attend. SATURDAY DECEMBER 12 A bake sale and tea will be held at the Thornton Lions Hall, beginning at 9 a.m. The event is hosted by New Life Community Christian Church. THURSDAY DECEMBER 24 Innisfil Community Church will host a free Christmas Eve dinner, beginning at 6 p.m. Each year, the church coordinates efforts to ensure lonely residents have access to a Christmas dinner. The meal will include turkey and all the trimmings. Participants will also receive a gift. Local transportation will be provided, and a candlelight carol sing will take place at 8 p.m. The deadline for reservations is Dec. 15. To reserve a seat, call Marion Boone at 436-1611. |
