For the last few weeks, the Innisfil Soccer Club has been hosting indoor clinics for players ages seven to 18, in the Nantyr Shores Secondary School gymnasium. Participants learn ball handling, passing, shooting and goaltending skills from coaches, and scrimmage.

The clinics are important for improving skill development during the cold weather months, to help produce strong players once the games move to the outdoor pitch in the spring, said Innisfil Soccer Club head coach Mark Cristante.

"We felt there was a need for this," he said. "We're teaching the players skill development. The program is 14 weeks, split into increments where we work on a specific theme. There's technical, tactical, physical and testing. We're trying to promote community service and develop these players for years to come. Hopefully we can develop coaches, referees and future college and university players."

The sessions are part of the club's Innisfil School of Excellence winter development program. The school began as a pilot project during the summer, to help produce top level local soccer talent.

However, players are also taught teamwork, and encouraged to have fun at each session, said Cristante.

About 100 players are participating in the sessions. Clinics run for one hour each Saturday, and are split into age categories. However, the club is recruiting new players for sessions that begin in February.

"We're promoting physical literacy, and creating club culture. We're trying to have people be interested in the game," said Cristante. "The ability for us to run year round program keeps the interest going. It's not just for summer. We want to create a positive, fun environment for kids to learn in and excel."

Players can enroll in the clinic for $100. For more information, e-mail info@innisfilscoccer.ca.
