Get out and walk your block this April. Two out of five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. You can help change this statistic by joining the Canadian Cancer Society as a volunteer canvasser for our annual door to door campaign. Volunteers are needed in Alcona, Big Bay Point and Lefroy. For more information, call Andrew at 436-3107. The Canadian Mental Health Association of Barrie-Simcoe supports the development and continuance of self-help groups as a viable community resource for individuals experiencing difficulties. Self-Help groups can provide; support and understanding through difficult times; an opportunity to meet with others who have experienced similar difficulties; information and education; a safe and comfortable environment; suggestions regarding coping strategies that help to get through difficult times. Good Food Simcoe is a non-profit organization bringing the Good Food Box to Innisfil. The box consists of an assortment of fruits and vegetables, much of which is grown locally. The cost is $10 for a small box and $15 for a large box. Orders must be pre-paid in cash and picked-up on the delivery day. They also need volunteers on packing day. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Barrie and District is actively recruiting volunteers over 20 years old for an in-school mentoring program in Innisfil. Both men and women are needed. They will be required to volunteer one hour per week during the school day. Many kids will benefit from having fun and spending time with someone, by simply playing a game of checkers, tossing a football, or reading a book together. SATURDAY FEBRUARY 6 Bond Head United Church's roast beef dinner and silent auction will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at St. John's Presbyterian Church, which is located at 2940 10th Sideroad in Bradford. The Simcoe County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society is meeting at 2 p.m., at the LDS Church, located at 79 Ferris Lane in Barrie. THURSDAY FEBRUARY 11 Barrie Thornton Old Time Fiddlers Night will be held at the Lions Hall on Barrie Street in Thornton. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 7. SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13 A Valentine Dinner Dance will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, located at the Yonge Street and at Mapleview Drive East intersection. Stroud Presbyterian Church has announced that Terry Chisholm is returning to the site at 7 p.m., for another concert featuring songs from Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, The Righteous Brothers, Engelbert Humperdinck and more. MONDAY FEBRUARY 15 The Innisfil Historical Society encourages kids of all ages to test their skills at crokinole, Chinese checkers, Tiddlywinks and chess, among other games, at Knock School from 1 to 4 p.m. Not a computerized game will be in sight; just hot chocolate, cookies and people having fun with board games. This is the third annual Family Games Day hosted by the society. TUESDAY FEBRUARY 16 A pancake supper will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, located at the Yonge Street and Mapleview Drive East intersection. Two sittings will take place, at 5 and 6:30 p.m. respectively. Admission is $6 for adults and seniors, and $20 for families. The menu includes pancakes, sausages, beverages and ice cream sundaes. A pancake and sausage supper will be held at Trinity United Church on Robert Street in Thornton, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. Following the supper, there will be a dust to ashes service in the sanctuary, starting at 7 p.m. THURSDAY FEBRUARY 18 The Simcoe County Arts and Crafts Association will run a guided tour of the Textile Museum of Canada, and fabric shopping on Queen Street West in Toronto. WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 24 A roast beef supper will be held at Gilford United Church, with sittings planned for 5 and 6:30 p.m. Homemade pies will be available.
