These floors were made for watching

South Simcoe Theatre volunteers have been painfully scraping away paint on the concrete floors of the facility since September, as part of the first stage of a makeover. They've since painted the floors with prominent beige, blue, burgundy and gold colours, giving the theatre an Old World feel, says project organizer Claire Barnsley.

"I had plenty of help from volunteers, but I'd just show up from time to time and just scrape away," she said. "It's way bigger than one person. I didn't want to go too modern, in keeping with the building. This was huge amounts of physical effort. It's cement, so we've worn out a number of pillows and scrapers. It's very hard on elbows and knees."

The theatre will present Thornton Wilder's Our Town, from Feb. 4 to 21. Performances will take place Thursday to Saturday at 8 p.m., with matinees planned for Sundays at 2 p.m.

Barnsley also helped design the set and costumes for Our Town. It's nice to see several artistic projects come to fruition at nearly the same time, she said.

"Everybody who walks in has a refreshed feeling about the theatre," she said. "It's very gratifying."

Our Town is a classic American play that traces everyday life in a small New England town, circa 1901. It won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1938, and celebrates how simple life seems when looking back to an earlier time, from a distance of 30 years. The play is also considered suitable for the entire family.

The next phase of the floor makeover is scheduled to be completed over the summer. Volunteers will add stamping to the floor, in an effort to make the floor appear carpeted, said Barnsley.

"I have an idea to further embellish it with a stamp pattern," she said.

"Based on the season opening, there's no time to do it. The next part will take place after we're done with Four Play."
