Lakers players suspended from roster

The Innisfil Lakers have recently suspended defenceman Garrett Simmons and goaltender Matt Cooper, indefinitely for disciplinary reasons.

Simmons had three goals for 10 points in 28 games, while Cooper has played 17 games this season with a 10-7 record and a 4.52 goals against average.

Forward Jonathan Dew (captain) and defenceman Anthony Gambacorta have also been said to abandon ship by walking out in the middle of a recent Lakers game. Lakers General Manager Dan Garneau said their status is unknown currently, though it could hurt the team.

“It would, but other players will have to step up,” said Garneau. “I would rather go with players that will play 110 per cent every shift. We’ve been a top team in the league since we started (three years ago). This season we’ve had our struggles, but we’ve brought players in, so we’ve been holding out own.”

Dew led the team with 68 points (31 goals, 37 assists) in 28 games before his departure. He also led the team in power-play goals with 10, shorthanded goals with three and game-winning goals with four, despite missing time with injury earlier this season. Gambacorta was second on the team with 53 points (14 goals, 39 assists) in 37 games, as well as seven power-play goals.

The Lakers are currently fifth in the Greater Metro Junior Hockey League standings with a 24-13-2 record. Simmons, Cooper, Dew and Gambacorta have all been subtracted from the Lakers legal GMHL roster, which means they cannot technically return this season with the Jan. 10 roster freeze deadline already passed.
